Can you have too many lenses? Probably, but only if you don’t know why you bought them and when to use them.
I have now three different lens kits for my Sony FS5 with a Shogun 7 recorder/monitor.
The first set is the convenience kit, when ease of use is most important and it consists of two zoom lenses. Typically News or similar where you do gun & run.
Sony 10-18/4 zoom
Sony 18-105/4 zoom
The second kit prioritize sharpness and consists of three primes and a matching zoom lens. My goto kit for Corporate assignments, but also used in documentaries.
Sony Zeiss 16-70/4 zoom
Sony Zeiss 24/1.8 prime
Sony Zeiss 35/2.8 prime
Sony Zeiss 55/1.8 prime
The third kit is about character and consists of six vintage manual Nikkor lenses from 70’ and 80’s with follow focus and adapters. The is the lenses we use for narratives where the cinematic feeling is more important.
Nikkor AI 20/3.5
Nikkor AI 24/2.8
Nikkor AI 35/2
Nikkor AI 50/2
Nikkor AI 85/2
Nikkor AI 135/2.8
A fourth option is no compromise, i.e. a PL-adapter and rent whatever you can afford.
Finally, I must confess that I have even more Nikkor lenses in my closet from my days as a photographer. Don’t ask me of how many 😉
