Media management maze

We have been using Hedge, Postlab, Postlab Drive and Frame.io for a while, much in line with what Alex Snelling writes in his whitepaper Final Cut Pro Shared & Remote Solutions 2021.

But media management sometimes is a labyrinth and the best way is not always straightforward. As usual it depending on a lots of different factors.

What we found out , so far, is a number if question we need to answer in order to find a track that doesn’t end up in a stop buck.

First, is post production done by one person or more? If several persons, then are they in the same location or not?

We don’t need to complicate simple things, neither treat complex challenges as simple.

Second, what type of production is this and what’s the time frame and budget for post?

There is differences how you approach media management in detail if we talk about news, events, corporate, documentaries, features or commercial productions. We probably need some different tools depending on category of production and needed effort.

Third, the type of media and how much of it also have an impact. There are differences in workflow if shooting with an iPhone, a mirrorless or a high end cinema camera. The same goes for sound, that could be recorded with image in camera, a separate sound mixer or captured via a PA-system.

As we are doing many types of productions together, with editors working remote from office, we need to describe how we do in detail for most common combinations of the questions above.

One step at a time, so we easier can board new persons into the team.
