The small sound bag

I asked Stellan Särlefalk, who is a long time production sound mixer and sound engineer, what’s in his sound bag that he use on set.

The bag is a Stingray medium size with a K-Tek harness to off-load the weight during long days.

In the bag, I have a Zoom F8N recorder and eight wireless systems that could be used with different types of microphones for different purposes.

Currently, I have six G3 receivers and two Sony receivers in the bag. The Sony receivers are URX-P03 with belt-pack and xlr-plug. The advantage of the Sony transmitters are that they have a phantom power supply of +48 V which is good when running a wireless boom.

Furthermore, I use a G4 system with 1IEM receiver for directors feed and a Sennheiser AVX-system as a wireless camera feed. To control the mixer, I use a 7” iPad with a Zoom F8-app that is connected via bluetooth to the recorder.

The equipment is powered via a DC-Hirose cable to a Hawk-Woods U75 battery via an adapter. It powers everything via a single mains switch that also contains a volt meter.

I’m now upgrading the bag on the receiver side with four of Sennheiser's new 6042 stereo receivers to get a better reach on location.

The reading behind this setup is cost, durability and flexibility. It should work day out and day in, be used for everything from features and short films to commercials and corporate videos, without breaking the budget for the producer.
